  • Breakout Session A:
  • The Holiness of the Family When the Nest is Empty

  • Deacon Joe Nines Ph.D., LMFT

  • This presentation will address the unique differences of family life when the children are grown and moved away. Using Pope St. John Paul II’s “Familiaris Consortio” exhortation, we will discuss how the holiness of the family remains, but changes in the “empty nest” scenario. Pope St. John Paul said that the family should “become what it is” based on four general tasks. We will explore how the “tasks” of being a family are different when the children have gone.

  • Breakout session B:
  • Civilization of Love

  • Speaker: Dr. Joshua Schulz, Mrs. Christine Schulz

  • Joshua and Christine Schulz will discuss Pope Saint John Paul II’s “Letter to Families” focusing on the “genealogical character” of the person and what this tells us about our identity and calling within the family. With Saint John Paul’s famous letter as a guide, we can shed light on various kinds of conflicts within the family—for example, how we grow and how we wrestle with issues of identity, independence, obligation, and virtue.

  • Joy Pinto, Executive Director of Her Choice Birmingham Women’s Center, also EWTN co-host At Home with Jim and Joy

  • Joy will discuss the beauty of being a daughter, wife, mother in all the seasons of life, drawing insights for husbands and wives from St. Paul's letter to the Colossians 3:12 - 21. How do we practically die to ourselves and live for the love of Jesus in all our relationships? The answer: more of Jesus and less of us, with an eye towards the Good of the Whole.
